ORDINANCE 1 , 2005
WHEREAS, THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF BUNKER HILL, MIAMI COUNTY, INDIANA BEING CHARGED WITH PROVIDING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR ITS CITIZENS; AND
WHEREAS, THE TOWN COUNCIL BELIEVES IT TO BE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE TOWN TO HAVE A RESERVE DEPUTY PROGRAM TO PROVIDE INCREASED COVERAGE FOR THE SAFETY OF ITS CITIZENS AND THE PROTECTION OF THEIR PROPERTY AT MINIMAL COST TO THE TOWN; AND
WHEREAS, IC 36-8-3-20 PROVIDES THAT TOWNS MAY APPOINT ANY NUMBER OF RESERVE OFFICERS; AND
THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED, THAT THE TOWN OF BUNKER HILL ESTABLISHES THE POSITION OF RESERVE DEPUTY UNDER THE FOLLOWING GUIDE LINES.
ARTICLE I. TITLE.
This ordinance shall be known as and may be cited as the "Reserve Deputy Ordinance" of Bunker Hill.
ARTICLE II. ADMINISTRATION.
It shall be the duty of the Town Council for the administration of this ordinance.
ARTICLE III. APPOINTMENT.
No person shall be appointed until they have successfully completed the basic requirements established by the Law Enforcement Training Board under IC 5-2-1-9, and
No person shall be appointed until a minimum three (3) month probationary period is satisfactorily completed and is recommended by the Town Marshal. Reserve Deputies are appointed by the Town Council upon the recommendation of the Town Marshal.
ARTICLE IV. ADOPTION BY REFERENCE.
Article VI, Duties & Responsibilities and Article VIII, Rules & Regulations of Ordinance 5, 2004, titled Town Marshal Ordinance, are made a part of this ordinance by reference.
ARTICLE V. DUTY HOURS.
Scheduling duty hours for Reserve Deputies shall be the responsibility of the Town Marshal.
ARTICLE VI. COMPENSATION.
Reserve Deputies are volunteers and serve in an unpaid status. However, as appropriations are made, Reserve Deputies may receive compensation for time lost from other employment due to court appearances directly related to Reserve Deputy activity. The Town of Bunker Hill shall furnish uniforms and badges. Side arms, weapons belts and cost of necessary training to become a Reserve Deputy are the responsibility of the Reserve Deputy applicant.
ARTICLE VII. AUTHORITY OF ORDINANCE.
This ordinance supersedes Ordinance 11, 1997 in its entirety.
ARTICLE VIII. APPROVAL.
THIS ORDINANCE WAS DULY ADVERTISED AND APPROVED BY THE TOWN COUNCIL
